The Inventiveness Index is a "public good" effort by Patent Index that aims to help regional economic development efforts across the nation. The main report ranks the inventiveness of the 250 largest metro regions. Other reports show the unique strengths of each region. Ongoing analysis show larger trends, new perspectives on invention, or specific technologies.

If you are in local, regional, state or federal economic development, or in patent law/analytics, academia, or corporate recon - the Inventiveness Index can give you insights into economic movements, or provide you actionable competitive intelligence... and more.

The Main Report
Main Report Thumbnail
(Feb 2016) This report details not only the relative ranking of the Inventiveness of the top 250 regions in the nation (for the years 2005-2014), but includes a lot of information about individual communities of expertise. Taking a unique view of the invention landscape, the Index looks not only at the Assignees (patent owners) in a region, but the Inventors themselves - who are often NOT co-resident with the Assignee. This lends insight into where the pools of talent are for any given discipline.
